What is Particulate Matter (PM)?

Particulate air pollution is defined by the US EPA as an air-suspended mixture of both solid and liquid particles. They are separated into three classifications: ultrafine, fine and coarse particles.

Ultrafine particles have a diameter <0.1µm and fine particles have a diameter of 0.1 to 2.5µm. These particles remain in suspension for a longer time. Coarse particles have a diameter of 2.5 to 10µm and settle relatively quickly. To make a comparison, human hair has a diameter of 50-70µm and a grain of sand has a diameter of 90µm.

  • PM 10 represents particles smaller than 10µm. These particles include dust, pollen and mold
  • PM2.5 represents particles smaller than 2.5µm. These smaller particles include combustion particles, organic compounds and metals.

PM affects more people than any other pollutant and can come from both human and natural sources. Natural sources include sea salt, forest fires, pollen and mold. As they are natural occurrences they are harder to control and are usually left unregulated. Human sources, however, can be regulated.

Understanding where PM comes from is very important. PM10 is most commonly associated with road dust and construction activities. Wear and tear of brakes and tyres on vehicles and crushing activities at construction sites can all contribute to a rise in PM10. Alternatively, PM2.5 is more associated with fuel burning, industrial combustion processes and vehicle emissions.

Why should we measure ambient Particulate Matter?

Air pollution is a global problem - and can be felt in many areas of large cities. The growing awareness of both PM10 and PM2.5 is largely associated with the potential damaging effects they can have on the human body. A recent study by a research group from the UK, the United States and Mexico shows a possible link between ultrafine particles in the brain and dementia. Via the lung tissue, the ultrafine dust can be absorbed into the blood circulation and spread further within the body - and penetrate into the brain. The World Health Organization (WHO) believes particles are affecting more people worldwide than any other pollutant and that 92% of the global population suffer from air pollution! Primary health effects include damage to the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Due to the small size of PM2.5 particles, they can penetrate the deepest parts of the lungs as well as access the gas exchange regions of the lung via diffusion.

The LaserEgg 2 has a small fan that pulls ambient air in through the back of the unit and pushes it out the front. In the middle, a laser beam cuts across this air current. As particles pass through the laser beam, the beam’s light is refracted. A sensor picks up the subtle changes, and information about the size and number of particles passing through is determined through a series of algorithms.

The LaserEgg displays the PM 2.5 fine dust value as well as Air Quality Index (AQI), Temperature and Humidity.

The LaserEgg 2 with its elegant design is suitable to use at home, office, in the car, or public places. An ideal multi-function testing tool to monitor the air quality around you. The LaserEgg 2 uses laser-based light scattering individually count particles as they enter the devices, and calculate PM2.5 concentration based upon these measurements. This allows for extremely fast measurements, with high accuracy readings calculated every 0.1 seconds.

The LaserEgg shows you the following information by the touch of a button:

  • Air quality data using US/CN AQI conversion, PM2.5 per µg/㎥ concentration or particle count. Measure particles down to 0.3 microns in size, like bacteria and smog
  • Air Quality Index (AQI CN US) based on the EPA calculation method. The measured value from 0 - 500 indicates the fine dust load
  • A color scale clearly visualizes the 6 different normed pollution levels
  • The current particle concentration PM2.5 in μgrammes per cubic meter of air
  • The current particle concentration PM 10 (number of particles larger than 0.3μm)
  • Activation of the night mode, which switches off the display but the measurements continue in the background
  • Continuous "battery charge indicator"
